Inside Phil Foden’s ‘magical’ journey – From a brick terrace house to becoming one of Man City’s brightest stars

He was raised in a humble end-terrace home in Stockport that was tucked up next to a string of unremarkable takeaways and beauty parlors.

But the England winger and his family’s lives have completely changed as a result of Phil Foden’s quick ascent to football celebrity.

.

And tomorrow, the country will come together to pray and hope that his brilliant talent may propel the Three Lions into the World Cup quarterfinals.

As the most complete English football player of his generation, Foden, often known as “Ronnie” to family and friends, just had his salary at Manchester City tripled to more than £200,000 per week.

The ubiquitously known Manchester City star Phil Foden to family and friends resides in a £2.85 million property with his partner Rebecca Cooke, their daughter and son.

The 22-year-old’s family was able to purchase a £3 million gated home in the charming Cheshire village of Prestbury thanks to his wealth.

In addition, earlier in 2022, he and his partner Rebecca Cooke, 22, moved into their own £2.85 million property next door with their one-year-old daughter and their three-year-old son, Ronnie.

Three years ago, Phil and his partner Rebecca moved into the peaceful village.

Foden has come a long way from his early years, when he was a little youngster obsessed with football and used to play in Edgeley Street with his older brother Callum and parents Phil Sr. and Claire.

His increasing wealth has had an impact on Mary, his paternal grandmother, as he was able to give her a £200,000 bay-front mansion a short distance from his childhood. Mary is 61 years old.

She was the one who first called him “Ronnie,” referring to his head shape as “Ronnie Roundhead.” And the inspiration behind Foden’s Man City squad number came from the 1947 passing of his grandfather, Walter, who was her companion. Foden, who also has four younger siblings, is obviously very attached to his family, and he is still proud of his Stockport heritage.

Scouted by Man City as a youngster, Foden worked his way through their academy and made his debut in 2017, aged 17

He grew up in a modest end-terrace house squeezed beside a parade of nondescript takeaways and beauty salons in Stockport

He has also spoken of feeling the ‘pressure’ to use his earnings to repay his parents for their support. In an interview with last month’s Esquire magazine, Foden encapsulated the reasons for his success on and off the pitch, saying: ‘I wanted to be able to look after my family.’

Phil Snr, 43 – ironically a Manchester United fan – now manages his son’s career, while his mother, also 43, is credited with keeping the young superstar’s feet on the ground. Last year she described how he was ‘the cheapest kid ever’, telling The Daily Telegraph his childhood was: ‘No games, no toys, nothing, just a football.’ Back in Edgeley he would incessantly practise from the moment he learnt how to walk, whether in the living room, the back garden, or the car park a few doors from his family home opposite a bookmaker’s.

Despite his superstar profile, Foden and Miss Cooke remain a familiar sight in and around Edgeley, returning regularly to visit family and friends.

‘He’s never Phil Foden to us, he’s always “Ronnie”,’ said Colette Haworth, 28, landlady of the Royal Oak pub. ‘You’ll often see him pushing a pram along the precinct, or carrying a takeaway and a bottle of wine.

Comparisons have been drawn on social media between Phil Foden and a grumpy-looking cat which has been given the nickname Phil Fur-den

‘People around here are very proud of how he’s stayed so close to his roots.’ Local shopkeeper Harish Panchani, 54, said: ‘He still comes into the shop with his girlfriend, he’s really down-to-earth – he takes his kids to the park over the road, and goes fishing in the local lake.

‘How many top footballers can you say that about?’ Mr Panchani added: ‘The whole family are just decent people, and I’m sure the way he’s still so rooted in the community is a big part of how he’s handled becoming so famous.’

“I think he’s on course to one day be the best player in the world,” stated Steve Eyre, his former coach. Fishing is a third reoccurring topic in Foden’s life, along with football and family.

He was unable to join the City team in celebrating their 2018 Premier League title because he had an earlier scheduled fishing trip with his father. “It’s good for clearing your head,” he remarked following a subpar game. Now that he is a parent and plays football, he has less time for the hobby.

Even yet, Foden is still devoted to his fishing buddies, like Paul Adrian, who Foden called following his incredible performance against Wales on Tuesday. Mr. Adrian, 50, said of his tackle store in Droylsden, Manchester, “He was on Cloud Nine.” “It was evidently his first World Cup goal, so he was just very happy and excited.”
