Dragon Ball Super’s Strongest Villain Teased the Return of Future Trunks

Since his debut, Future Trunks has become a fan favorite within the Dragon Ball fandom and his unexpected return in Dragon Ball Super was met with excitement and praise. While his latest storyline ended with a fairly happy ending, it seems as though fans haven’t seen the last of the sword-wielding Saiyan as Dragon Ball Super’s strongest villain already teased his return.

Arguably the strongest villain in Dragon Ball Super is Zamasu/Goku Black. Zamasu is Universe 10’s Supreme Kai-in-training, and he used the Super Dragon Balls to not only make himself immortal, but also to have one version of himself inhabit the body of Goku and use his power to decimate every conceivable universe. Zamasu rose to power in Trunks’ future, so Trunks went back in time and brought Vegeta and Goku to the future to help defeat Zamasu and Goku Black. When they got there, however, the villain was far too strong to defeat, and in the end, the only way they were able to finally destroy Zamasu was by alerting Zeno of his crimes, leading to the Omni-King destroying the entire universe. Since Zeno, the all-powerful god of the Dragon Ball universe, was the one who delivered the final blow to Zamasu, the villain proved to be too powerful for Goku and Vegeta to beat, making him one of, if not the strongest villains they’ve ever faced. After he was defeated, Lord Beerus took Trunks to an alternate timeline where Zamasu never rose to power, giving him a fresh start.

In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 16 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, Trunks details the events leading up to Zamasu’s invasion of his world. Before Goku Black decimated the Earth, Trunks, Supreme Kai, and Old Kai were training to become powerful enough to prevent the rising of Majin Buu. In the main Dragon Ball universe, Majin Buu was resurrected and wreaked havoc on the Earth until he was finally stopped by Goku. In Trunks’ reality, Goku died before the Androids came to be, so Trunks was the only hope the world had at defeating Majin Buu. So, he and the Kais decided that the only way to win was to prevent him from rising up in the first place.

While preventing Buu from coming back to life may seem like a good thing on the surface, especially given how hard he was to defeat in Dragon Ball Z, that could end up being a very bad thing for Trunks moving forward. In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 42, fans are introduced to the villain Moro who was imprisoned millions of years ago by an entity known as the Lord of Lords. As it happens, Buu actually absorbed the Lord of Lords and retained the essence of the god. In the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga,” the Z Fighters recruit Buu to help them fight Moro after he escaped from prison as his power far exceeds their own, but since Trunks kept Buu from resurrecting, he is left without his help when Moro inevitably escapes in his timeline, meaning he will assuredly need to recruit his allies from the past once again.

Trunks is a powerful warrior and skilled fighter, but he has no hope of defeating Moro all by himself. Even while channeling Ultra Instinct, it was still a struggle for Goku to beat Moro, and since Buu was kept in his cage in Trunks’ timeline, that ace in the hole is also not an option. Once Moro breaks out of prison, Trunks will have no choice but to go back in time and recruit Goku and Vegeta to help him stop the villain, a return to continuity that was teased in Dragon Ball Super when Zamasu, the series strongest villain, first reigned terror upon Future Trunks’ world.
