One Piece Chapter 1167 explains how Fisher Tiger escaped Mary Geoise, and now Jinbe would’ve reunited with him if not for Shanks.

The spoilers for Chapter 1167 of One Piece’s manga are here, thanks to the reliable X account, @pewpiece. From Harald being forced to serve the World Government to Ida’s death, it’s an incredibly intense chapter. However, Shanks takes the crown, with the reveal that he freed Fisher Tiger 15 years ago. This indirectly connects him to Jinbe, the helmsman of the Straw Hats.
Before Jinbe joined the Straw Hat Pirates, he was a Sun Pirate and the sworn brother of Fisher Tiger. He was extremely loyal and respected him deeply for freeing slaves from Mary Geoise. Luffy might have had a personal connection with Shanks, but Chapter 1167 links the Red Hair Emperor with Jinbe in a way that goes beyond personal. Will this dynamic be explored in One Piece?
Jinbe Owes Shanks a Lifetime of Debt for What He Did in One Piece
Fisher Tiger is one of the most respected characters in One Piece. He was an explorer who was enslaved by the World Government, and he escaped around 15 years ago. He didn’t stop there, however; he climbed the Red Line to get to Mary Geoise and freed other slaves, including Boa Hancock and her sisters. He gained the admiration of the Fish-Men, particularly Jinbe.

Jinbe and Fisher Tiger were incredibly close, having grown up in the same orphanage together. They’ve been through thick and thin together, from saving Koala to the Marines’ last ambush. When Fisher Tiger died, Jinbe begged for him to live and cried for him. He then went on to continue his legacy, becoming the second captain of the Sun Pirates.
For years, One Piece had never told us how Fisher Tiger got out in the first place. Mary Geoise seems impossible to escape from and infiltrate, especially since very few characters have managed to do it, such as Rocks and Kuma. Chapter 1167 finally explains the feat, with Shanks being the key.
According to @WorstGenHQ on X, which adds more details on @pewpiece’s spoilers, Shanks was a God’s Knight, but his goal was to infiltrate Mary Geoise and get intel. He masked himself and freed Fisher Tiger.
Thus, Jinbe would have never reunited with Fisher Tiger if not for him. Although he doesn’t know it, he owes Shanks a huge debt. The Emperor might have saved Luffy from the Sea King, but freeing a slave and reuniting a family is more impactful.
Will Jinbe Ever Find Out What Shanks Did for Fisher Tiger?

As far as we know, Jinbe and Shanks have never met, but they have heard of each other. Both of them are prominent and experienced pirates, and are now in respective Emperor crews. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they met in future chapters.
One Piece fans have been waiting for Luffy and Shanks to reunite as well. They are likely to be accompanied by their crews, which means Jinbe should be able to meet Shanks. Perhaps the Emperor will recognize the tattoo and tell Jinbe that he knew Fisher Tiger.
It’s up to Eiichiro Oda if he wants Jinbe to learn what Shanks did for his old friend. It would be a heartwarming moment between two unlikely characters that you wouldn’t have expected to have a connection.
Moreover, Chapter 1167 brings back Fisher Tiger, showing us that he will never be forgotten in One Piece’s storyline. His impact wasn’t limited to arcs like the Amazon Lily and Fish-Man Island. Shanks did more than just save someone when he freed Fisher Tiger; he ignited a revolution.
