The hint by the mangaka suggests that One Piece is not a Devil Fruit or a weapon, but a story that recounts the events of the Void Century.

Did Roger’s Hidden Words Reveal the True One Piece?

Although Eiichiro Oda has never clearly revealed what the One Piece treasure really is, Roger’s words when he first saw it give an important hint. In Chapter 967 of One Piece, when Roger and his crew landed on Laugh Tale and discovered the truth left behind by Joy Boy, he commented: “This is quite a treasure you left behind, a tale full of laughs.” The word tale here grabs the attention, as even other translation mentions it being a story or a tale.

Not only that, when Oden wrote about their adventures in his notes, he mentioned that it was on that day they learned all the truths of the world. The only way they could have learned all the truths about the One Piece world is if they somehow got their hands on the written description of the mysteries of the world, including the Ancient Kingdom, Joy Boy, the establishment of the World Government, Ancient Weapons, etc.

Even though there are certain plot holes within this theory, it still sounds reasonable for Oda to include some kind of description of the past events with the One Piece treasure. It is the only way that the pirate group that reaches Laught Tale in the future will be able to make sense out of it and place it accordingly in terms of the story and the fate of the world.

The Idea of One Piece Being a Story Could Disappoint Some Fans

While the One Piece treasure being a story or a description of the past events makes sense, a majority of fans won’t be excited about it at all. In fact, it might turn out to be a huge disappointment considering the hype that has been created around the treasure since the very beginning of the series. It is believed to be something that could change the fate of the world, and a tale describing the events of the past is simply not enough.

Another reason this idea could disappoint fans is the long-standing expectation that One Piece is something real and extraordinary. For years, the story has built the treasure as a physical reward that pirates were willing to die for. Countless battles were fought, and entire crews risked everything to reach it. If the final answer turns out to be just a story or a record of past events, it would be heartbreaking.

While a story of the past of the One Piece world could still play an important role in revealing the truth, it risks falling short of the massive hype created over the decades. Many fans want a conclusion that feels powerful, emotional, and worth the long wait, and it can only be achieved when the One Piece treasure turns out to be something completely unexpected.
