One Piece: Who Are the Galleila and Where Are They Now?

One Piece first mentioned the Galleila in Chapter 1154 through Jarul, but what if we told you they’ve been foreshadowed before?

The Galleila were first mentioned in Chapter 1154 of One Piece. Jarul, the oldest giant in the world, speaks to King Harald about the group, and it seems as if even the people of Elbaph know of them, but as a myth. Galleila was an ancient warrior group of shipwrights, some of whom were Ancient Giants. According to Rocks D. Xebec, they are incredibly powerful.

Unfortunately, not much is known about the Galleila, and Jarul says that the last they heard of them was through a letter, stating that they have been imprisoned. It’s implied that the World Government must have done it, which explains the ancient feud between them and Elbaph. However, One Piece may have foreshadowed their purpose and whereabouts well before this arc.

Every Hint About the Galleila We’ve Seen So Far in One Piece

Apart from what we’ve stated about Jarul’s description, Chapter 1154 exposes a bit more information. As expected of the World Government, any history of the Galleila has been sunken into the sea. He also mentions an army of giants that have been frozen and hidden away, but their location is unknown.

The first theory that came up among One Piece fans is the most obvious one. Galleila’s name bears similarity to the prominent shipwright company introduced in the Water 7 Saga, the Galley-La Company. They aren’t nearly as ancient as the Elbaph warrior group, having been established 7 years ago by Iceburg, but being the inheritor of Pluton’s blueprints offers a bridge.

Pluton, an Ancient Weapon and a highly advanced warship, could’ve been created by the Galleila. Although its history is tied to Galley-La, the names are too similar to ignore as a hint. One Piece has thrown us off before with phonetic similarities, such as Gold Roger and Gol D. Roger.

However, the first hint of the Galleila’s existence is in One Piece Chapter 648. Noah, the giant ship created during the Void Century, currently rests at the Sea Forest, falling apart. Shirahoshi hears the Sea Kings discuss whether they can repair Noah, but they need a specific group’s skills. Who else could it be but the Galleila?

Lastly, we might have seen the Galleila before during the Punk Hazard Arc. From what Jarul said about the frozen army and the visual of them, Chapter 660 presents a similar visual with the corpses completely frozen.

One of the giants on the left even has a shoulder tattoo that looks like the Galley-La symbol inverted. The World Government did use Punk Hazard for experiments, so it’s aligned with what Jarul told Harald about their disappearance.

The Fate of the Galleila Remains Unknown, but Not Forgotten

The giant shipwrights of the Galleila have to be out there somewhere, and Punk Hazard might be the key. The frozen corpses of giants, paired with how Jarul described them in Chapter 1154, are too similar to be a coincidence.

Moreover, Rocks needed them for his plan to overthrow Mary Geoise, using Big Mom for her intel on Elbaph in Chapter 1156, and talks about them with his crew on Hachinosu. Considering he knew of Imu’s existence and had knowledge of other mysteries, he must be right about the Galleila, too.

Here’s an overview of the foreshadowing and proper mentions of the Galleila:

Panel Description Chapter Number Page(s)
Jarul talks to Harald about the Galleila and mentions a group of frozen giants. Chapter 1154 10-11
Rocks mentions that he needed the Galleila’s strength to overthrow Mary Geois. Chapter 1156 16-19
Rocks tells Loki that the Galleila are slumbering somewhere, are powerful “ravagers,” and that Harald can awaken them for unknown reasons. Chapter 1166 13
Roger overhears the Sea Kings talking about needing a group to repair Noah Chapter 648 6
Nami and Chopper see the frozen corpses of giants in Punk Hazard. Chapter 660 4-7

Overall, the Galleila will remain a mystery until Eiichiro Oda deems it time for them to make an appearance. They will likely appear in the Final Saga as they are being mentioned more. What are your theories about the Galleila? Let us know in the comments below!
